Hair fall: 10 common causes and when to see a doctor

Losing some hair every day is normal. Here is how to tell when it is not, and what is usually behind it.

Everyone loses hair; 50–100 strands a day is normal as old hairs make way for new ones. But if you notice more hair on your pillow, in the shower drain or a widening parting, it is worth understanding why.

10 common causes of hair fall

  1. Stress and illness. A fever, surgery, COVID or major stress can push many hairs into the shedding phase at once. Heavy shedding then starts 2–3 months later. It usually recovers in 6–9 months.
  2. Iron deficiency. Very common in Indian women. Low ferritin is linked with diffuse thinning.
  3. Thyroid problems. Both an underactive and overactive thyroid can cause hair fall.
  4. Low protein or crash diets. Hair is made of protein; sudden diets often cause shedding a few months later.
  5. Vitamin D and B12 deficiency. Both are common in India and often checked when hair falls.
  6. Hormonal changes. After childbirth, stopping contraceptive pills, or with PCOS.
  7. Genetic (pattern) hair loss. A receding hairline or thinning crown in men; a widening parting in women.
  8. Dandruff and scalp problems. An itchy, flaky, inflamed scalp can worsen hair fall.
  9. Tight hairstyles and heat. Tight buns and ponytails, frequent straightening and harsh treatments break and pull out hair.
  10. Medicines. Some medicines list hair fall as a side effect. Never stop a medicine without asking your doctor.

What you can do at home

  • Eat enough protein every day: dal, paneer, eggs, curd, soy, sprouts.
  • Treat dandruff early with a medicated shampoo.
  • Be gentle: wide-tooth comb, no combing soaking wet hair, loose hairstyles, less heat.
  • Massage your scalp a few minutes a day to relax and improve the habit of care.
  • Sleep 7–8 hours and manage stress where you can.

When to see a doctor

Book an appointment if:

  • Hair is coming out in clumps or you see round bald patches.
  • Hair fall is sudden and heavy and has lasted more than 6–8 weeks.
  • Your scalp is painful, red, scaly or itchy.
  • You also have tiredness, weight change, irregular periods or other symptoms.
  • Your parting or hairline is visibly thinner than a year ago.

A doctor can suggest blood tests (iron, thyroid, vitamin D, B12) and a treatment plan. Burnett doctors offer a free consultation, and our hair fall guide covers routines and next steps.
